ANKARA, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- Turkey said Tuesday that eight of its F-16 jets patrolling the Syrian border were harassed by an unidentified MiG-29 and missile defense system on Monday.
"Our aircraft was harassed by a MiG-29 aircraft of which the nationality cannot be determined," the Turkish army said in a statement post online. "Turkish jets were under a radar lock by MiG-29 for 4 minutes and 30 seconds, and also harassment by missile defense system from Syria."
This was the second similar incident involving an unidentified MiG in as many days.
Two Turkish F-16s patrolling the Syrian border were harassed by unidentified MiG-29 on Sunday.
Turkey said on Monday that a Russian warplane violated its airspace on Saturday in the southern Yayladagi town of Hatay province near the Syrian border.
On Tuesday, Ankara said Russian aircraft violated Turkish airspace again on Sunday, one day after the first breach that prompted protest from Ankara.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry summoned Russia's ambassador in Ankara again on Monday to protest the breaches, warning of "unwanted results" from similar violations, a Foreign Ministry official told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
The Russian Defense Ministry on Monday blamed bad weather conditions for the brief violation of Turkish airspace.
"The incident was a consequence of unfavorable weather conditions in the area," the ministry said in an online press release. "One should not look for any conspiracy theories here."
NATO also protested the incident. Turkey is a member of the defense alliance.
"Allies strongly protest these violations of Turkish sovereign airspace, and condemn these incursions into and violations of NATO airspace," it said in a statement on Monday.
